The word “alcohol” derives from the Arabic “al-kuhul” a term applied to the chemical compound ethyl alcohol or ethanol. The Arabic term denotes “kohl” a fine powder of antimony used as eye makeup. In its earliest usage, the word “alcohol” denoted any fine powder. Alchemists of medieval Europe later applied the word to essences obtained by distillation.
